Options March 5th

March 4, 2011

For tomorrow, I thought it would be useful to try out different handling options on a single course. The setup is from the Backyard Dogs in the March issue of Clean Run, and specifically, the version in figure #7. I’m not reproducing the course map here in respect of CR’s copyright.

As is typical, CR provides a step by step handling recipe. Nothing wrong with that recipe. For some, it probably is a great way to handle the course. Personally, I would handle it differently, which brings me to the point that I think it is a rare circumstance where one single plan is right for all, or even most, dogs and handlers. So, rather than relying on the CR plan, each team is challenged to find as many different ways to handle the course. Naturally, the CR plan may be one of those, but try to find other options, varying different sides, layering, different types of crosses, etc. Having a level of comfort with handling in different ways comes in very handy when something unexpected occurs in a run, or you find that you can’t get to where you had planned to be etc.
